Nonprofits Present Budget Requests to Fluvanna Board

Posted: Updated:

Dozens of nonpofits are presenting their budget requests to the Fluvanna County Board of Supervisors at a work session Wednesday.

Twenty-four Fluvanna County nonprofits are hoping to be granted financial help. Some of those organizations will give presentations at Wednesday night's meeting to explain why they need the money and where each dollar will go.

Fluvanna County Supervisor Shaun Kenney says the board needs to be careful about how much money each nonprofit is granted.

"Its not a good economy right now. Tax payers are cash strapped, and we don't want to be in a position where we're taxing folks so much that they actually have to take advantage of some of these nonprofits," said Kenney.

JAUNT, the Piedmont Housing Alliance and the Thomas Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District are just a few of the nonprofits presenting budgets.

The Jefferson Area Board for Aging (JABA) says the Fluvanna County staff have recommended an increase of $27,000 from last year's funding.

JABA's Chief Operating Officer Marta Keane says although this is great news to the organization, they're still hoping for more funding.

"The senior population is really growing in Fluvanna, and so those needs continue to grow and over time there's going to need to be more of an investment in seniors," said Keane.

Money granted to JABA funds the organization's community center in Fluvanna. Keane says if JABA is not granted additional funding the community center will continue to remain open only one day a week. She says ideally they would like to keep the center open 2 to 3 days a week.

Despite a recommended increase in funding for JABA,  the final decision rests with Fluvanna County supervisors. They will begin that process March 20.
