Plans for a trail bridge to connect the two sides of McIntire Park in Charlottesville are moving forward. The Charlottesville Department of Parks and Recreation held a meeting Monday night to let the public know how far along the project is.
It says the project is going to cost about $1 million, twice as much as it originally thought.
Project Manager Chris Gensic says people are happy to see progress.
"I think at this point everybody is really excited that this is almost completely funded and they can expect to see it built in their lifetime. This bridge has been a long time coming, and so last night most people were very enthusiastic that it's a real project. It's not just a plan sitting on a shelf," said Gensic.
The Department of Parks and Recreation has filed another request to the state and federal government for more funding. It will find out if it is granted in June.
Gensic says, ideally, the bridge would open next summer.
