Attempted Abduction Victim's Parent Scrutinizes Mall Security

Posted: Updated:

Fashion Square Mall's security company isn't saying much Tuesday after being blasted by a father, speaking out about his daughter's attempted abduction at the mall.

The father spoke out after the felony abduction charge against James Key, 46, was dropped on Monday.  The Albemarle commonwealth's attorney says he was suffering a seizure when he grabbed the child at the mall.

Police say Key snatched the two-year-old as she was walking through Fashion Square Mall with her parents.

The victim's father spoke out for the first time Monday since the incident. He said he was never satisfied with Allied Barton's - the company that runs the mall's security -  response.

"I was most disappointed with Allied Barton's response - their statement that they put out.  It almost made us, made me - the way they termed it equal playing field, equal level with Mr. Key that if I remember right it was an incident between.  It wasn't between us.  He grabbed my daughter," said the victim's father.

"It painted us in an ignorant light.  It almost could be interpreted that I got into an argument with this man, you know.  It left a lot of speculation open towards us, and that angered me.  we were there shopping, we were looking for a Christmas ornament and my daughter was picked up and that was out of line on their part," he continued.

We reached out to the mall directly for a response to the family's concerns.

Managers sent an email saying their commitment to guests and employees is the number one priority, and they will continue to take steps to ensure a safe and comfortable shopping environment.

Allied Barton Security Services did not respond by the time our 5 p.m. newscast aired. We will update you if more details become available.

Allied Barton Security Services' response from Wednesday, November 28, 2012

A concerning situation recently occurred at the Charlottesville Fashion Square Mall and it is important for mall customers and community members to know that the mall and its security team are committed to their safety.

AlliedBarton security officers patrolling the mall responded to an incident surrounding a family having an exchange with another patron, and escorted the patron from the property. Our security officers then followed up with the family and they were satisfied with our response and the action taken.

After learning that the family later reported the incident to the police as a possible attempted abduction, AlliedBarton is reviewing what occurred and the conduct of our officers to ensure that our team is following proper procedures. We are also providing our full cooperation to the police.

We understand and share the concern that all parents have for their children. Our first priority is safety, especially as it applies to children. AlliedBarton is dedicated to helping maintain safe and secure environments for all of our clients and their customers.
