Monticello Girls Win Region Championship

Posted: Updated:

The Monticello girls basketball team beat Western Albemarle 50-37 to win the Region II, Division 3 championship Saturday.

The victory is the first region title in program history.

Head coach Josh McElheny says, "We just last year got our first banner to put up on the wall, so now all the sudden we're starting to put some numbers up on the banner in a hurry, and it's a great feeling."

Mustangs senior Bridget Holleran scored a game-high 15 points in her final game on the MHS court.

"It means so much more," says Holleran, "walking off the court and realizing that's my last time on the court. It's so emotional, but it felt so good. We're the regional champs. That's the best way to end my season on my home court. We're just on top of the world right now."

Two-seed East Rockingham beat Altavista 56-37 to win the Region B, Division I title.

Top-seed Spotswood topped Brookville 60-41 to capture the Region III, Division Three championship.

After scoring more than 100 points in the semifinals Friday, the William Monroe boys fell 52-50 against Dan River in the Region B, Division Two championship at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg.
