Thousands Exercise Gun Rights at Western Virginia Sports Show

The Second Amendment debate continues in the Shenandoah Valley.

Thousands of gun owners, buyers and sellers came out to exercise their gun rights at the Western Virginia Sports Show in Fishersville Saturday.

For some, it was a day to support the Second Amendment.

"I don't want to be that person that has no way to defend myself," said Monte Jessee, gun owner.

Jessee keeps a gun on his belt every day. He says he keeps it concealed because it's not meant to make a statement but provide protection.

"It's there if I need it," he said. "I've had the training that's required, I teach self-defense classes, I teach concealed carry classes, and again it's all about responsible gun ownership."

Saturday's Western Virginia Sports Show at Augusta Expo was packed with gun owners. One says he thinks it's good to devote a day to supporting Second Amendment rights.

"They've got days for everything now, so why not a day of resistance?" said Will Helmick, Sports Show attendee. "But like I said, if Congress don't get their heads together and the president doesn't get his head together we're going to have a revolutionary war in this country."

And where there's support - there is also opposition. On the same Saturday, Gay Lee Einstein attended a rally for greater gun control in Richmond.

"I like to think that my children and my grandchildren will grow up in a safe country, they won't have to worry about safety, and I think the proliferation of guns is just going to make it a very scary scene in our country," she said.

Einstein says this issue has been close to her heart for many years - especially since her daughter's friend was shot in the 2007 massacre at Virginia Tech.

The Western Virginia Sports Show continues through Sunday evening.
