James Lewis Kardos, 23, is behind bars at the Charlottesville-Albemarle Regional Jail facing five charges related to a domestic dispute in Charlottesville. He also faces four charges resulting from a subsequent standoff with police in Fluvanna County.

After the reported dispute, police began a search for Kardos that led them from Charlottesville to Fluvanna. Fluvanna County sheriff's deputies and Virginia State Police spent hours Friday night trying to coax Kardos out of his father's Lake Monticello home.

Hours earlier, Charlottesville police responded to an emergency call on Sheridan Avenue. The woman who called 911 said Kardos had brought his 24-year-old girlfriend and their child to her house for a visit. She says she heard a loud noise outside and a pounding on her door. When she opened it, she saw Kardos and his girlfriend fighting.

The woman - who chose to remain anonymous - says alcohol fueled the fight.

"That's when we typically are involved in a domestic violence case, where the emotions were riding pretty high," said Charlottesville Police Lieutenant Robbie Roberts.

Charlottesville police say Kardos hit his girlfriend with a blunt object. Kardos left Charlottesville and was located by Lake Monticello police at his father's home on Clark Court.

Police began communicating with Kardos from outside the house.

"Any time you have a suspect that you know has weapons or a suspect that has previously committed an act of violence, it is a very hostile situation," said Fluvanna County Sheriff Ryant Washington.

Around 7:30 p.m. Friday, Kardos fired a single gun-shot.

"It was not discharged from what we could tell at any officers but it was discharged through the ceiling of the residence," Washington said.

A state police tactical team entered the house and took Kardos into custody around 12:45 a.m. Saturday.

"We certainly hope that the gentleman gets treatment he may need, if he needs treatment, but at the same time there is going to be consequences for action," Washington said.

Kardos is charged with child endangerment, grand larceny, malicious wounding, abduction, and a bond violation in Charlottesville. In Fluvanna, he is charged with unlawfully discharging a firearm in an occupied dwelling, unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, resisting arrest and operating a motor vehicle with a revoked driver's license.
