William Monroe Clinches Berth in State Tournament; Beats Stuarts Draft 108-89

Senior Markell Williams scored a game high 32 points, and the William Monroe HS boys basketball team beating Stuarts Draft 108-89 in the Region B, Division II semifinals Friday Night.

The win clinches a berth in the state tournament for the Greene Dragons, and William Monroe will play Dan River in the regional finals Saturday at 8pm in Harrisonburg.

Head coach Mike Maynard says, "We're just enjoying the moment. I've been here seven years, and we've never made it past this spot. This is good for our program."

"It's a dream come true," says Williams. "It means everything. These fans follow us everywhere. They're the best fans ever, and I just love William Monroe so much."

Senior Garry Morris had 21 points for William Monroe, while sophomore Jamal Simpson had 15 for the Cougars.

Dan River ended Buckingham's season with a 64-51 win in the other Region B, Division II semifinal game.  

The Knights' Timmy Randolph had 23 points and 12 rebounds in the loss, while Cam Johnson had 18 points. 

Buckingham finishes the season with an impressive 23-2 record.
