Barboursville Vineyards makes a wine that beat out almost 400 others in the statewide Governor's Cup competition.
Governor Bob McDonnell awarded the 2013 Governor's Cup to Barboursville's 2009 Octagon 12th Edition Thursday night.
Barboursville has received this prestigious award a record-breaking four times since the competition started in 1982. Winemaker Luca Paschina says he is confident in his merlot blend.
"It's exciting because it's a wine that we've been producing for many years, which represent the best we can produce from our land here at the vineyard and '09, it happened to be an ideal growing season and since the very beginning, we really were convinced that it's going to be a great wine in a few years," he said.
The 2009 Octagon is not yet on the market. Barboursville plans to roll it out August 1. Paschina says he's already gotten calls to reserve cases of it.
