UVA played without senior Telia McCall, who missed the game due to the recurrence of concussion symptoms.
The defeat was also the first for the 'Hoos without Kelsey Wolfe, as the junior will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL.
Ataira Franklin scored a game-high 24 points to lead Virginia.
The Cavaliers (15-11, 7-8 ACC) held a double digit lead in the 2nd half, but were unable to hold off the Tigers.
UVA returns to action Monday at 7pm at home against Wake Forest.
James Madison won for the 15th time in the last 17 games, as the Dukes crushed Towson 79-45.
JMU (18-8, 12-2 CAA) was led with 17 points from freshman Jazmon Gwathmey and senior Tarik Hislop.
Junior Kirby Burkholder had 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Madison will return to action Sunday at #18 Delaware.
