UVA Basketball Focuses on Defense Before Heading to Miami

Posted: Updated:

The University of Miami basketball team has moved up one spot this week in the polls and they're now ranked No. 2 in the nation.

The 'Hoos play the Hurricanes Tuesday, February 19 in Coral Gables.

Virginia Head Coach Tony Bennett said, "We'll go into their place and we'll have to be ready and we'll have to defend at a higher level then we did probably on Saturday against Carolina. We had some trouble so we'll have to make them really earn their shots. The thing with Miami is you can't just take one area of their game away they can hurt you in a lot of areas. . .they have depth and experience and that makes you have to be very sharp on the defensive end and of course offensively as well."

Miami rallied to win at Clemson last night 45-43.

"We've gotta be as tough minded as we can defensively with what we have and I think our guys understand that. Again, that's a way for us if you watch how Clemson almost upset Miami its because they were locking down defensively. They were trying to take good shots and against real high powered offensive teams that have depth - if you get in a high possession game you have to be careful unless your just on fire and they cant stop you," said Bennett.

The Hurricanes improve to 12-0 in the ACC - that's the best start for any team in the conference since Duke went 16-0 fourteen years ago.

Virginia is 8-4 in the conference after losing 93-81 at North Carolina Saturday.

The 'Hoos shot 59 percent in that game but Carolina's 93 points were by far the most Virginia has given up this season and the guys know they must return to their defensive roots.

Bennett said, "I hope we keep scoring at that clip and our defense will just get a little sounder than it was on Saturday."
