Monticello HS Girls Basketball Inches Closer to State Tournament

Posted: Updated:

The Monticello high school girls basketball team plays host to Kettle Run Tuesday in the regional playoffs.

The Mustangs have won 15 in a row and they're hoping they have the right moves to reach their ultimate goal - the state finals.

Before each game the players write the number 70.4 on their hands in permanent marker.

Bridget Holleran said, "our coach at the beginning of the year wouldn't tell us what it meant. He would just say 70.4 and he finally told us."

Molly Shephard explained, "its the distance between our gym and the Siegel Center in Richmond where we'd play in the state final."

Each time the Mustangs raise their hands for a cheer or hit a low point on the hardwood the 70.4 on their hands reminds them to keep hustling.

That's exactly what they've done all season.

Head Coach McElheny said, "They can't stand being behind when the clock hits zero. They're going to find a way to win every night ."

If the girls win in the second round of the regional tournament, they'll make school history - but that's not the goal. With 70.4 on their hands and a number one seed in the tournament, this close knit group has their sights set on a state championship.

Holleran said, "I think our determination and the fact that we haven't gotten this far yet pushes us even harder because we want it so bad."

"Honestly - we're on top of the world right now," added Shephard.

Coach McElheny said, "Its been a goal to get this far and they've done nothing but work hard ever single day to get here."
