UVA Men's Lacrosse First Year Goalie Dan Marino Debuts In Style

Posted: Updated:

First year Dan Marino got his first career start Saturday as he helped backstop the UVA men's lacrosse team to an overtime win in their season opener against Drexel with 15 saves.

Marino said, "it just felt unbelievable."

Head Coach Dom Starsia added, "I thought he looked good from the beginning."

Marino's 15 stops between the pipes broke a program record in the Drexel series and are the most by any freshman making their first career start at Virginia.

While Marino's journey to gameday at Klockner Stadium was a dream come true - it wasn't easy by any means.

"Ever since I was a little kid this is everything I wanted in a school and in a program and a lacrosse club. So when I got here I knew it was going to be a hard fought battle...it was a dog fight ever since Coach Starsia told me I was starting Thursday," said Marino.

The Cavaliers agree that being a first year goalie is a huge change of pace.

Matt White, who had 4 goals against Drexel including the game-winner said, "I think that's one of the toughest jobs in sports - being a freshman college lacrosse goalie. Seeing some guys come out here and shoot the ball 98 miles per hour on the run. Its not easy!"

Marino hopes to continue to improve as he adjusts to the speed of college lacrosse and gears up to take on VMI Tuesday, but the 'Hoos are elated by his impressive debut.

White said, "he's really poised and mature. He just played a great game. I'm just so proud of him so happy for him."

Starsia added,"I thought he was very good at times and gave us a chance to win the game."

"To get the first win under my belt it just means a lot for these guys most of all and for me," said Marino.
