Senior attackman Matt White scored the game winning goal eleven seconds into overtime, as the #9 UVA men's lacrosse team beat Drexel 13-12 in their season opener at Klockner Stadium.
The Dragons had tied the game on a rebound goal by Ryan Belka with 10 seconds left in regulation to tie the game and send it to OT.
"I just told them that we prepare for these situations all the time, and let's just make a play right now," says head coach Dom Starsia. "Mostly you just want to keep your wits about you and get the personnel in the right places and be ready to make a play."
White adds, "Both teams deserve to win today, as much as that pains me to say but luckily for us the good guys came out on top. It was a great game."
White had a game-high 4 goals, while junior attackman Nick O'Reilly added 2 goals and 4 assists.
Freshman goalie Dan Marino had 15 saves in net while making his first start at Virginia.
UVA has opened the season against Drexel for 12 years in a row, and the Wahoos have six straight wins against the Dragons.
