Pedestrian Struck by Train Near Charlottesville Amtrak Station

A University of Virginia student is dead after being hit by a freight train near the Charlottesville Amtrak station Friday night.

Police said the 18-year-old man intentionally laid down on the tracks.

Investigators say the Norfolk Southern train was moving 25 miles per hour and came to an emergency stop, but could not avoid hitting the young man.

He was rushed to the University of Virginia Medical Center where he died.

Police say the student was from New Jersey.
