#25 UVA Baseball Wins Season Opener In Grand Fashion

UVA sophomore Kenny Towns had two grand slams and eight RBI, as the #25 Virginia baseball team won 14-4 at East Carolina in its season opener Friday.

Branden Cogswell added three hits and scored three times for Virginia, while Brandon Downes drove in three runs.

The Cavaliers had runners on base in every inning.

Towns hit his first grand slam in the top if the 1st inning to give UVA a 4-0 lead.

The Cavaliers sophomore added his second 4-run home run in the 7th inning, when Virginia scored eight-runs to turn a 6-3 contest into a rout.

Freshman Brandon Waddell pitched 4.2 innings for UVA, giving up two runs on five hits while striking out five.

Freshman Josh Sborz picked up the win in relief.

Sophomore Brandon Downes went 2-for-5 with a run scored and 3 RBI.

Virginia and ECU will play Game 2 of the series at 10 am Saturday.

The game has been moved up from 2 pm due to weather-related concerns.
