Press Release

The Albemarle County Police Department's Traffic Unit conducted a speed enforcement operation on Thursday, February 14th from 8:30am until 3:30pm. The operation was on the 29-250 Bypass, south of the City of Charlottesville, in the area of Fontaine Avenue. The speed limit in this area is 55 miles per hour. Those charged with speeding were traveling between 68 and 81 miles per hour.

During this enforcement effort, 148 summonses were issued for speeding. Two drivers were also cited for reckless driving by speed. In addition to the speeding summonses, we also issued the following charges: six registration violations, three equipment violations, three inspection violations, one drivers license violation and one failing to yield to a law enforcement vehicle (this relates to the new Move Over law).

Ten officers and one supervisor were assigned to this operation, which was partially funded by a DMV Highway Safety Grant. Speed is one the top causation factors we see in traffic crashes in Albemarle County. Through speeding patrols and operations, we hope to raise awareness and reduce crashes.
