Western Albemarle's Maggie Kooken Signs with Radford for Track and Field
Western Albemarle's Maggie Kooken signed her national letter of intent on Thursday to run track and field at Radford University.
Kooken has won the Region II title in both the shot put and discus throw. She also competes in the high jump, long jump, 100 meter dash and 4 x 100 relay team and has placed in the Jefferson District in all of these events.
Her current personal record is 38' in the shot put and 117' in the discus. Both are very close to being Western Albemarle school records, which she hopes to break this Spring.
Radford is excited about Kooken's potential as both a heptathelete or a thrower, primarily javelin, discus and shot put.
Kooken says, "I really like the team and the coaches and everyone is really friendly down there. They're offering me a chance to compete as a freshman and make an impact on their team and I was really excited about that."
Kooken has worked hard to get to this point and adds, "I think the extra time has really gotten me this far, dedication and working hard when everyone else wasn't kind of helped me get to this point.
