Northrop Grumman to Lay Off 60 Employees

Posted: Updated:

About 60 of Northrop Grumman Corporation's employees in its electronic systems sector will be laid off next month. These employees will come mainly from the company's campuses in Charlottesville and Maryland.

A spokesman would not elaborate on how many people will be getting pink slips in Charlottesville.

The layoffs will take effect on February 28.

About 280 Northrop Grumman employees have already accepted voluntary buyouts.

Statement to WVIR-TV News Regarding Workforce Reduction at Northrop Grumman:

"In October of last year, employees were informed of plans to eliminate up to 350 positions at our Electronic Systems sector facilities in Maryland and several other states by early this year.

The workforce reduction action is intended to improve the overall affordability of our products, systems and the infrastructure that supports them to enable us to remain competitive in the defense industry going forward.

In an attempt to mitigate the impact on employees, we first conducted a voluntary separation program in which approximately 280 employees chose to participate.  However, the number of volunteers did not reduce our headcount to the extent required.

As a result, we must undertake an involuntary reduction totaling about 60 positions.  The impacted positions are primarily at our Maryland and Charlottesville, Virginia campuses, with a small impact on positions at facilities in California, Illinois and elsewhere.

Employees affected by this workforce reduction were notified yesterday, with their last workday being Feb. 28. Impacted individuals will receive all separation and other benefits for which they are entitled and the company will also provide outplacement assistance to help those who will be seeking other employment including at other Northrop Grumman facilities."

END OF STATEMENT
