'Hoos Beat Hokies 73-55

Posted: Updated:

The Virginia Cavaliers improve to 18-6 overall and 8-3 in the ACC as they glided past in-state rival Virginia Tech 73-55.    The 'Hoos are 8-3 in the conference for the first time in six years.

Virginia Tech only led once in game, that was in the first half at 18-17.   The 'Hoos held the ACC's leading scorer Erick Green to just one point in the first half.   Green finished with 22 points.

UVa Head Coach Tony Bennett said, "He got a couple open looks that he didn't hit but there weren't a lot of them. You could see in the second half how he said alright well I'm gonna draw fouls and get to the lane and score that way and he got a couple rhythm looks but Jontel was locked in and it worked against him and that's what you have to do. And the other guys were certainly aware of him."

Joe Harris was on fire scoring a career high 26 points.  He tied a career high with five 3-pointers for the Cavaliers.

Harris said, "I got myself in a rhythm early on and I feel like it was great for us to jump out that way. I think shooting is contagious when guys see the ball go in the basket everybody kind of feeds off of it."

Akil Mitchell netted an ACC career high 17 points, hitting double figures for the 17th time this season.

Point Guard Jontel Evans matched his season high 8 points. This win is the 'Hoos third straight in the series against the Hokies.

Virginia also extended its home-winning streak to 14 games - the longest in John Paul Johns Arena history.

The Cavaliers take on North Carolina in Chapel Hill Saturday at noon.  You can watch that game on NBC29.
