A dog is recovering from surgery in Waynesboro Tuesday night after apparently being run over by a train.
The golden retriever, named Heidi, was rushed to Woodworth Animal Hospital after the accident on Monday. Animal control and veterinarians believe it happened on railroad tracks near the dog's home on Commerce Avenue. One leg and part of her tail were amputated and another paw was damaged.
Even so, she managed to limp home.
"No matter how much trauma this dog has suffered, she never whimpered. She never tried to bite. She let them do whatever they needed to do to help her. She never once gave up; she's fought every bit of the way," said Waynesboro Animal Control Officer Dee Price.
The Mosby Foundation is helping with the cost of the dog's surgery and rehab. Donations must be marked for "Heidi" and are tax-deductible.
