WMHS Looking To Use Baseball Experience On The Basketball Court
The William Monroe boys basketball team finished tied for first place in the Bull Run District last season, but lost a tiebreaker game to determine the district champion, and had their season come to an end sooner than expected.
This season, the Dragons left nothing to chance, and finished 14-0 in the Bull Run.
Monroe is currently on a twelve game win streak, and will host Manassas Park in the second round of the Bull Run District Tournament Wednesday at 7:45 pm.
The Green Dragons baseball team finished last season with 25-wins in a row, and the school's first state championship.
Both the basketball and baseball teams are coached by Mike Maynard.
Maynard says, "It is different sports, but we talk about baseball a lot. I have four guys that played baseball, and we talk about the experience, and how much fun we had last year."
The Dragons finished the regular season undefeated in the Bull Run, and undisputed district champs for the first time since 1995.
With four players on both teams, Maynard says the championship experience has been very beneficial.
"Junior Austin Batten scored the game winning run, and sophomore Keegan Woolford knocked the run in, so there couldn't be any more pressure than that," says Maynard. "Hopefully now maybe Austin can throw the ball to Keegan on the wing and he can make a jump shot."
William Monroe will have homecourt advantage throughout the district tournament.
"I love this gym more than anything," says senior forward Markel Williams. "We have so many great fans, and it's packed almost every night, so it's going to be a lot of fun."
Senior guard Gary Morris says, "When the fans come and we have a good student section it helps a lot to have home court advantage. This is a team that can win a state championship."
William Monroe was region and state champions in 1994 and 1995.
