Cavaliers Beat Terps 80-69 In College Park

Posted: Updated:

The Virginia men's basketball team beat Maryland 80-69 Sunday in College Park, Maryland.

The Cavaliers tied their season-high with 11 made three-pointers, including a perfect 4-for-4 from Paul Jesperson (12 points).

Junior guard Joe Harris led UVA with 22 points, and has reached 20 points in 3 of his last 4 games.

"That was like target practice," says senior point guard Jontel Evans. "These guys couldn't miss. They've been getting shots before and after practice, and it's been paying off."

Jesperson says, "Especially when you've been working on it, and getting your extra shots, it's great to see it carry over into a game."

Head coach Tony Bennett adds, "It's good when guys are sharing the ball like that, sharing space on the floor, getting comfortable. We needed that. We gave up 69, and that wasn't a particularly strong defensive effort to be honest with you, especially down the stretch. But that's ok. We had enough to get away with it, but we have to tighten up."

One-time Maryland verbal commitment Justin Anderson had 17 points, and the UVA freshman also grabbed a career-high 9 rebounds for the Wahoos, despite facing the wrath of the Terps fans.

Anderson says, "It's not even about individual things. It's about playing basketball our way, our style. Just playing real hard, that's what we wanted to do. We got the scouting report, and went through their plays in practice. We were just going through the plays, for the plays. It wasn't trying to show anybody anything. Coach didn't try to make this game special for me."

Bennett says, "He had some good, physical rebounds, and it was good to see him do well in this setting. I was hopeful for him coming here. I really wanted it to go well for him."

Evans adds, "I told him, 'Don't try to do anything outside your character. We're your family. We got your back. Just play your game, and we're going to try to get this 'W''. That's what he did, he was amazing."

Evans dished out 8 assists in the victory, while junior forward Akil Mitchell chipped in 13 points.

UVA (17-6, 7-3 ACC) has won four games in a row against the Terrapins, as well as three in a row in the Comcast Center.

Virginia will be back in action Tuesday, as they host Virginia Tech at 7 pm.
