International House of Pancakes (IHOP) restaurants all over the country participate by giving away free short stacks of buttermilk pancakes for any donation to the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.
The money raised at the IHOP off Route 29 in Albemarle County will go toward UVA Children's Hospital. The money will help fund specialized programs and research on children's health and family care.
"It's a special day today because it really involves the entire community, and people from all over the place... all over central Virginia," said Ryan Lighter, a Children's Miracle Network program coordinator for UVA Children's Hospital. "No matter what your career might be and how much money you might make, anyone can come and leave any amount and get a free stack of pancakes," he said.
Last year National Pancake Day raised over $3 million for the Children's Miracle Network, including about $3,000 raised for the UVA Children's Hospital.
National Pancake Day is held from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday.
