Lawmakers are taking steps to crack down on bullying in schools across the state.
House Bill 1871 passed the House of Delegates 93 to six Monday. It would officially define "bullying" in the Virginia Code as "any aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim…" It would also require school boards to implement anti-bullying policies.
The idea is part of a series of recommendations backed by Governor Bob McDonnell's School and Campus Safety Task Force, adopted to make Virginia's schools more secure in the wake of recent shooting tragedies.
