UVa Basketball Set for a Showdown with #19 NC State

Posted: Updated:

It will be a battle between two of the top teams in the ACC Tuesday night when Virginia hosts 19th ranked NC State.   Virginia has a record of 4-2 in the ACC.  NC state is 5-2.

The Cavaliers are riding a three game win streak and are just a game behind the second place Wolfpack.  NC State is a veteran team.  Four of NC state's top five scorers are upperclassmen led by this junior C.J. Leslie who's averaging 15 points per game.

The Wolfpack leads the ACC and ranks sixth in the nation in scoring averaging 80 points per game. Richard Howell will be tough to defend inside. He's averaging 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The young Wahoos rank in the top ten nationally in seven different defensive categories setting up an intriguing matchup.

UVa freshman guard Justin Anderson says, "Its going to be a tough physical game, I think we're going to be ready to go war. They have some really good individual players and I think they play collectively pretty well. I just think we need to be tough and as Coach Bennett would say rugged, that's my favorite word right now. That means you have to get down in the dirt and do the dirty work in order to win these games."

Coach Tony Bennett says, "They're more dangerous in transition right now than most teams we've played. I think Brown has that ability as a big point guard to be a one man fast break. Any team that plays NC State or Carolina you have to make it a priority to get your defense set against them because if they can get flowing and get those easy buckets in transition its going to be a long night for you."

Bennett adds, "They have some key pieces you know with Leslie and they've got the rebounder in Howell who we're familiar with and certainly their point guard Brown is terrific. Three talented players and a shooter like Wood - they're just a complete team that has experience and will require a high level performance on our part."

UVa senior guard Jontel Evans says, "We know we're on a three game winning streak and we're gonna keep it going so we have to remain focused. So if someone's goofing off and not paying attention one of us has to go to them and like look here lock in and we have to do a job on Tuesday night and we have to continue it."

Virginia and NC State tip off at 7pm Tuesday at JPJA.
