Federal investigators have released a report about the December 2011 crash that killed an Albemarle County family.
The single-engine Socata plane crashed along a New Jersey interstate shortly after takeoff. The crash killed pilot Jeffrey Buckalew, his wife Corinne, their children - Jackson and Meriwether - and one of Mr. Buckalew's business associates, Rakesh Chawla.
The factual report - released Thursday - details what National Transportation Safety Board investigators discovered about the accident. An NTSB factual report does not find a cause of the crash; it contains a description of all the evidence of the crash.
The report on this crash mentions the aircraft and its engine did not appear to have mechanical malfunctions before the accident. The report also notes severe icing reports from other pilots in the area. The plane's de-icing system switches were found in the on position.
