A church in Gordonsville is helping keep the community warm this winter.
Mechanicsville Baptist Church hosted a free coat giveaway Saturday. More than 20 families received warm coats, gloves, hats and hoodies.
The church's basement was packed wall to wall with coats for adults and children. They didn't have the size one woman needed, so church members took her out Saturday afternoon and bought her a new coat that was the perfect fit.
"We realized with the cold temperatures and with the way things are with our economy and just the general condition of things that it was time we did something to reach out into the community and we wondered what would be a helpful way to just help people and meet their needs," said Ted Williams, a pastor.
All the leftover coats have been donated to the Goshen Baptist Ministry Center and will continue to be given out.
