Newly Empty Technology Center in Greene Up for Grabs

Posted: Updated:

Greene County is looking for the right company to move into a high-tech building with a lot of potential.

The Tall Oaks Technology Center is up for grabs.

When Video Game Technologies (VGT) moved to Tennessee last year, it left an empty building and people who live in Greene County out of work. But it also opened the door to opportunities for a new tenant and for the county.

Sixty-thousand square feet, the highest level of technology for data transfer and a concrete bunker to protect top-secret research - that's what the Tall Oaks technology center has to offer.

But right now, the facility is empty. Tom Gillette served as the office and facilities manager here for video game technologies, or VGT.

"There was a closeness that developed within the team that was here that was really special," Gillette said.

When VGT left, its 240 employees were relocated or out of work. Gillette is in job search mode.

"A lot of people had been well entrenched like we are here as a family here in central Virginia and so we decided to stay here for sure," he said.

People like Gillette are part of the appeal for businesses thinking of moving in.

"There's over 5,000 people that commute each day out of Greene County so it would mean a huge thing to bring a company here that would be able to take advantage of the workforce," said Tony Williams, Greene County's director of economic development.

Williams says the location is key, it's just miles from the DIA facility and the University of Virginia.

"It's the best of both worlds when you're looking at being secluded because we're far enough to be secluded but close enough to take advantage of all the services," Williams said.

Now, it's a matter of finding the right company to plug in to the potential.

"I think this could be a place that could either be one company or could be kind of a smorgasbord of companies," Gillette said.

Williams says the search for a new tenant is going well and it's only a matter of time before they find the right fit.
