House of Delegates Takes Up Education Reform

Posted: Updated:

Pieces of the governor's education reform package, including pay raises and higher standards for teachers, are making their way through the House of Delegates.

Staunton Delegate Dickie Bell is promoting a bill that would extend the probationary period for new teachers from three to five years before they are offered a continuing contract. It would also create a stricter process for teacher evaluations and complaints.

"We continue to ask more and more of the students, we're going to ask more and more of the teachers also. We want the best teachers in the classroom," said Bell.

Bell's bill passed unanimously through the committee process. The House of Delegates is expected to pass it and other education reforms this week.
