Democrat Jason Vandever formally announced his candidacy for Charlottesville city treasurer at an event at CitySpace Wednesday morning.
Vandever has served as chief deputy treasurer since 2008 and took over as interim Charlottesville city treasurer last October when Jennifer Brown retired.
He says if elected he would come up with a new tax collection system and continue improving services.
"I think there are a lot of nuances and intricacies. Because I've been there, I'd really like to expand on those. So I'd really like to expand the services we're already working on, and that includes the online services and things like that," Vandever said.
Vandever is challenged by independent John Pfaltz. A special election is scheduled for April 2.
