Waynesboro City Hall Meeting on Proposed Changes to Constitution Park

Posted: Updated:

Proposed major changes to Constitution Park in Waynesboro were up for scrutiny Wednesday evening. The plans were on display at City Hall showing proposed renovations for the park.

The riverfront park stands at the eastern gateway to downtown Waynesboro. Architects have offered a vision that aims to draw more locals and outside visitors.

"We're trying to put the park back in the park. And put parking based activities back in the parking lot, because they need paved spaces and we want a more park-like setting in the park," said Dwayne Jones, Waynesboro parks director.

Phase one of the two-step project will make the river easier to see from inside the park. It also proposes demolishing the pavilion, home of the farmers market.

"Farmers do not like having to set up a tent each week that blows down and does not give them proper shade," said Ellen Winter of the farms market.

Waynesboro's Department of Parks and Recreation hope to have plans finalized by March 2013.
