UVA Men's Tennis Opens The Season At #1

Posted: Updated:

The UVA men's tennis team is the top-ranked team in the nation.

Again.

Junior co-captain Alex Domijan says, "It's meaningful, yet meaningless at the same time. Preseason rankings are overrated in any sport."

Virginia is the #1 in the nation for the 6th time in the last eight years.

They've been the preseason favorite four times over that span, but the Cavaliers say their focus remains on the postseason.

"The last couple of years, our season has been defined by the final result, and we haven't gotten it done," says Domijan.  "I think if we're #1 at the end of the year, that's all that matters."

Head coach Brian Boland adds, "Being #1 in the preseason is something we appreciate, but at the same time, it doesn't mean a whole heck of a lot. It's how we finish the season."

The 'Hoos are hoping to serve up their first national championship this season, after falling in the finals the last two years.

UVA returns 5 of its top 6 players from last season.

Domijan says, "We have a lot of guys that you could play anywhere in the lineup, really. Our five guys could probably play #1 at a lot of schools."

Boland adds, "I think this group has as good a chance as any I've coached to win a national championship."

Virginia has been eliminated by four-time defending national champion USC in each of the last four seasons.

"I want to beat them," says Domijan.  "If we win it, and we don't beat them, I'm like, 'Eh.' I want to beat them and win it. That's #1."

USC beat UVA in the national quarterfinals in 2009, the semifinals in 2010, and the finals in 2011 and 2012.

Virginia will open its season at home against North Florida as part of the ITA Kickoff Weekend Friday at 6pm at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
