Three years after his initial visit, Haiti's ambassador will return to Charlottesville this weekend. Raymond Joseph will speak at Ebenezer Baptist Church on Sunday to talk about his latest effort to restore the country's forest.
The effort is called "A Dollar a Tree for Haiti." It is an online push that collects donations specifically for reforestation efforts. Since the earthquake, it's estimated only two percent of Haiti's land is covered with trees.
Rev. Dr. Lehman Bates of Ebenezer Baptist Church stated, "Right now there's an ecological problem occurring in Haiti as result of the earthquake. The erosion of the land and the destruction of most of the vegetation and the trees has caused a crisis of sustainability."
Joseph will speak during the 11:00 a.m. service at Ebenezer this Sunday. A reception and press conference will follow.
