Police Investigate West Street Shooting in Charlottesville
A Charlottesville neighborhood was disrupted by a shooting Tuesday afternoon. When the shooting stopped, two homes were hit. The sound of gunshots rattled neighbors near West Street in Charlottesville.
"I was on the phone and I just heard like fireworks - just pow pow pow pow - like real loud," said Adrian Phillips, a neighbor.
"I have not heard of anything quite like this," said Lauren Wells, another neighbor.
Shortly before 4:20 p.m. Tuesday, a 911 call from the area came in for a verbal argument between a group of males. The call was soon upgraded to a report of 10-20 shots fired.
Police arrived just minutes later, only finding shell casings at the scene. Lieutenant Ronnie Roberts with the Charlottesville Police Department says investigators recovered less than 15 shell casings.
"During the preliminary stages, they discovered that two structures were struck by a stray round," Roberts said.
Two homes along West Street were hit in the upper levels. No one was injured, and police say they believe this is an isolated incident.
"I'm sure discharging, hearing weapons going off, it would alarm anyone, but the other side of it too is that it happened at this location and I don't believe that any of the parties involved would have been residing here. It just happened to occur at this location," said Roberts.
With a 2-year-old son and a baby on the way, Wells is thinking twice when it comes to the safety and security of her home. "I think it does make us think about the security measures that we do take for our own home in terms of lighting and locks and home security systems and things like that," she said.
Investigators and forensic teams were on the scene for over two hours collecting evidence. There are currently no suspects in this case. If you have any information, call Crime Stoppers at 434-977-4000.
