UVA Architecture Students Have Big Ideas for Rivanna River

Posted: Updated:

University of Virginia architecture students are challenging Charlottesville to think outside of the box about the future of the Rivanna River.

They've worked around the clock for the past six days to design projects that would boost the Rivanna's role in the community. This afternoon, they showed off their big ideas, ranging from building a world's fair experience along the river to extending the river into new parts of the city.

"There's a lot of fantastic ideas, seemingly impractical to some, but when I reflect back on how we dealt with the Belmont Bridge, there's some kernels of design elements that will be very, very important to build on," said Kathy Galvin of the Charlottesville City Council.

The annual school-wide competition focused on the Belmont Bridge last year, and produced the foundations for the plans now being considered for that bridge.

Organizers hope this year's projects hold the same potential for the Rivanna River.
