Barracks Road Shopping Center Repairs Delayed

Posted: Updated:

Shops damaged by the fire at Plow and Hearth in Charlottesville are hoping to get up and running as soon as possible, but that's proving to be difficult.

As time ticks on, the lost sales are adding up.

Monique Moshier and her team at The Happy Cook hit the ground running to clean up after the fire that broke out in Plow and Hearth at Barracks Road shopping center two Mondays ago. They cleaned out the store, discarded damaged products, packed up anything that was left, and tore out the floors.

Now, the store is a quiet, empty space.

Moshier says her store can't do the 10 days worth of work it needs to do until the shopping center's management company finishes its share of the work.

"We had been working very aggressively to get this project going and we've done so much and now we've had no work being done since Wednesday, that's obviously very frustrating," Moshier said. "We don't have much left in our process to get us up and open again but at this point it's sort of out of our hands. But it would be nice if we could get moving again and get the store open."

Moshier hopes the structural engineer will give the center's management company the go-ahead tomorrow. If that happens The Happy Cook could re-open by the beginning of February.

Moshier says between the closing and the restoration, The Happy Cook is looking at a quarter of a million dollars in losses so far. She says her other concern is losing customers, but she's remaining hopeful since the store has a loyal following.
