24/7 Theater Festival at Charlottesville's Live Arts

Posted: Updated:

The adrenaline is rushing for some Charlottesville actors, directors, and playwrights.

They worked through the night and all day Saturday to develop seven, 10-minute plays for the Whole Theatre's 24-7 festival at Live Arts.

"This is a big deal for me," said Mary Burruss. "I'm totally nervous. This is the first time I've done this and I am terrified because the last time I had a part with lines was 1993."

Burruss and her fellow actors come from all different backgrounds. Some act on a regular basis, some have never acted before. But they're all here for a one-day theater rollercoaster.

"Just the challenge of it drew me to the project and I think that's what brings everybody here is "Can I actually do this?" Well I'll know by 11:00 tonight," Burruss said.

Once they finish their read-throughs and go over what they'll need from the propmasters and light and sound crews, they move on to rehearsal.

Veteran writer Robert Wray says the energy brought him back to the 24/7 festival, this time as an actor.

"Everyone's like jazzed on adrenaline right through the day," Wray said. "I think you get sort of wired and tired at some point but then you know you have show time, you open and then you close you know all in one fell swoop."

And after a final technical rehearsal with blocking, lights, sound and costumes, the teams are ready to share the magic of their mad rush on stage for audiences.

"The economy of Charlottesville is really driven by arts and culture and when you've got something this exciting, I think it just makes everybody want to come and be a part of it and I think it gets people excited about people in general," Burruss said.

The teams are performing twice Saturday after their long day of hard work. First at 7 p.m. and again at 9:30 p.m. All proceeds will go to Live Arts to create more theater and art in our community.
