Some Progress, Some Disagreement for State Gun Legislation

Posted: Updated:

It's better luck next year for some now defunct gun legislation. Lawmakers in the Virginia Senate struck down a collection of gun control bills Friday.

But the issue of mental health did get bipartisan support. Democratic Senator Adam Ebbin's bill to ban the sale of firearms to the mentally ill received praise from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, as well as the National Rifle Association.

"That's part of it, not to let guns fall into the hands of the mentally ill," Ebbin said. "And anything we can do to make that happen is a step forward."

"That's what you saw here today: a bipartisanship to work on those issues to help fix that," said Republican Senator Bryce Reeves.

Cooperation did not carry over into the discussion about universal background checks for gun purchases, however. As of Friday, none of the bills advocating such a measure will move forward in either house this session. But lawmakers in the Senate are still considering a bill to require background checks on firearms sales at gun shows.
