Watkins Sentenced on Animal Cruelty Charge

A Charlottesville woman who, police say, left her two dogs abandoned and malnourished will spend 40 days in jail.

Forty-year-old Loretta Watkins was charged with two counts of animal cruelty after two dogs were found in a house on Vine Street on September 17, 2012.

Police say a large shepherd had its muzzle wrapped in duct tape. They also found a malnourished poodle that weighed just five pounds.  A maintenance worker tipped off police that the dogs were in the home.

Monday Watkins was sentenced to 180 days in jail for each charge, but most of that was suspended. She will serve 20 days in jail for each charge.

Both dogs have since been adopted from the SPCA, where we are told they are doing well in their new homes.
