UVA Student Group to Speak Out Against Dragas in Richmond
University of Virginia students and staff are headed to Richmond to block a confirmation vote for Rector Helen Dragas.
The Virginia Senate Privileges and Elections Committee will meet in Richmond Tuesday afternoon. They will decide whether to recommend confirming Dragas to continue serving on the UVA Board of Visitors.
Members of the student group Hoos University are getting ready to voice their opposition in person.
"I think that in some ways all this energy is positive from our perspective no matter what because at this point the board of visitors knows that they're really under a lot of public scrutiny and I think that's good. I think it's good for public institutions to know they need to be accountable for their constituents," said Hoos University member Laura Goldblatt.
Group members say Dragas is harming UVA's reputation, especially after the attempt to oust President Teresa Sullivan last summer. The committee meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m.
