Churches in Augusta County are coming together tonight to host a fundraiser for the surviving relatives of a Churchville family killed in a house fire last month.
Four members of the Stokes family - including a 9-year-old boy - died in the blaze that destroyed their mobile home on December 21.
More than ten churches put together Saturday evening's chicken dinner fundraiser for the family at Glossbrenner United Methodist Church. The church charged $9 for a plate of food with all the proceeds going toward funeral expenses for Wilda, Sharon, Charles, and Matthew Stokes.
The churches sold 850 pieces of chicken Saturday morning at the community park in Churchville. Organizations throughout the community are also lending a hand. The Eagles Club in Staunton gave the family $1,000.
"All the people are giving tremendous donations and its being very helpful," said Steve Morris, the organizer of the event. "Everybody's working together, doing it for the right reason to help a family in need."
All proceeds will be used for family funeral expenses.
