Martin Luther King Day is coming up and one Albemarle County school is celebrating in a unique way. The school is not just celebrating Dr. King, but also celebrating students who exhibit his same qualities every day.
Twenty students were honored at a ceremony at Woodbrook Elementary School Friday. The kids were picked by their teachers for having qualities similar to Dr. King himself, such as cooperation, assertion, responsibility, and self-control.
This is the second year of the program and the teacher who started it says she wants to go beyond just the basic lessons about Dr. King.
"I wanted to find a way to reflect and celebrate on Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy, while at the same time let kids know that they're the seed of his dream," said Leslie Wills, the diversity resource teacher at Woodbrook.
Administrators say programs like this help reduce school bullying. In the past year, the amount of bullying at the school reported by students has dropped significantly.
