Jontel Evans Returns To UVA After Bumpy Road to Recovery

Posted: Updated:

Jontel Evans has started 71 games at point guard for the Virginia men's basketball team but a stress fracture in his foot during the off season has limited his play to 1 start this season.

To add salt in the wound, Evans' re-injured his foot against Tennessee.

Evans said, "it was very frustrating you know, I didn't know why. I felt like it was good and I had to sit back."

After watching many UVA practices and wins from the sideline, Evans finally got to step back on the court in the 'Hoos ACC season opening win against North Carolina.

He played a game that even one of the biggest names in college basketball couldn't ignore.

UNC Head Coach, Roy Williams commented, "I thought in the second half, Jontel was really big for them. We couldn't stop him from getting to the basket...He creates plays for them he takes the ball to the basket he's a penetrater."

Evans said, "you know me being a senior this is my last time competing against them in this gym so its very special for me to get the "W."

Head Coach Tony Bennett agreed that UVA missed his ability to see the court.

Bennett said, "He got us some great looks and that makes all the difference in the world."

For Evans - he's just appreciative that everyone's had his back during this bumpy road to recovery and hopes to keep this momentum going as they continue conference play.

Evans said, "I give all the props to my teammates, my family and my coaches they just told me to keep my head up and stay positive and when I get my chance again just take advantage of it...I feel like I came into my own. Back to my old ways a little bit but as the season progresses I feel like my performance can just get better."
