Charlottesville Venue Raising Money for Makeover

A Charlottesville art and concert venue is trying to raise $10,000 for a makeover.

The Garage is on First Street in Charlottesville and it might be tiny but the space packs a crowd.

"From art openings to concerts to dance parties, potluck dinners, things like that," said Sam Bush, curator of The Garage, on why the space is so appreciated.

The fun ended last September when a car crashed through one of the walls. Now The Garage supporters are doing all they can to rebuild.

The group is doing a Kickstarter project to raise the money. Kickstarter is an online funding platform for creative projects. Supporters created a video explaining what they need the money for and now people from around the world can fork out cash.

"What we thought was really important about The Garage was that it has such a huge community of people that are involved with it so we wanted the video to sort of show that community," said Ross McDermott, creator of the video.

The video has taken off and the group says people across the world are donating to their project. In just one week they've already raised $7,000 toward their goal.

But, there is a catch.

"You have to meet your mark by the deadline or else none of the donations are actually there, they end up not being transacted," Bush explained.

The Garage curator and friends are doing everything they can to get the word out about the online fundraiser. From posting the video on their Facebook and Twitter pages, to spreading the message by word of mouth, they're determined to meet their goal.

If The Garage gets the $10,000, the money will go toward a new wall, floors, lighting, a new sound system and website. They also want to purchase a small camera to document performances in this tiny space.

The Garage has until January 18th to raise the $10,000.
