Former UVA Professor to Run for Charlottesville City Treasurer

A former University of Virginia professor is running in the special election for Charlottesville city treasurer. Friday afternoon John Pfaltz announced his independent candidacy.

Pfaltz used the announcement to show how independent he is from the city, holding the event outside of a train's caboose in North Garden, VA. He says he made his announcement far away from city hall to show his separation from the city.

"I'm not in city hall, I'm out here in an independent location," said Pfaltz.

As a former professor of computer science, Pfaltz says he has already been deeply involved in the CityLink computer system used by the city, and has built financial database systems.

Pfaltz says if elected, he will be transparent with the public. "We had a $3.8 million surplus - nobody knew about it for four months. That's ridiculous. One of the things that I'd like to do is bring quarterly reporting," said Pfaltz.

Democratic Interim Treasurer Jason Vandever says he's excited to start his campaign for the race. "I care deeply about our community.  I care about having a government that's responsive and responsible to its citizens," he said.

Vandever has spent the past four years as the city's chief deputy treasurer.

Former Republican City Councilor Rob Schilling says he thinks an independent person would be better in the seat than a party candidate. "I do think independency from the treasurer's office is a very important part of this equation, for many years there has been a very close relationship and basically single-party control within Charlottesville city government," said Schilling.

Both candidates plan to focus on transparency. Pfaltz says he plans to use quarterly reporting, while Vandever says he's working on the city's performance management system which is about to go live.
