An Albemarle County village post office that avoided closure last year is facing a new threat in the New Year.
Scott Peyton and the Greenwood Citizens Council are leading the effort to stop the U.S. Postal Service from cutting hours at their community's post office.
The new "Post Office Structure Plan" recommends eliminating two hours a day from Greenwood's open hours. Peyton believes the U.S. Postal Service is renewing its effort to shift services from Greenwood to Crozet.
"By reducing hours of operation and relocating essential services, you have functionally gutted this facility. And we're quite convinced their long-term intention is to do just that. They're just going about it in a different mode," Peyton said.
The postal service is holding a forum to collect comments from people who use the Greenwood office. That meeting will start at 5:30 on Wednesday, January 9, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Route 250.
