End of Celebratory Season Means Post-Holiday Blues for Some

Right now, everyone's getting back in the swing of things after the holidays. Now that family members have gone back home, a certain sadness can kick in, but there are some things you can do to snap out of the post-holiday blues.
"And we are told that it's the best time of the year– that when everything goes away, we put the tree away, family goes home, we're not eating all those rich foods, we get the blues," said Lucie Lafontaine who works in the Martha Jefferson Hospital Emergency Department.
The post-holiday blues can set in during the holidays, but more commonly, right around New Year's where people find it hard to adjust from the abundance of celebrations and can find themselves feeling down frequently.
"Again, the celebration is gone because usually from Halloween to New Year's you've got Thanksgiving you've got Christmas, you've got New Year's and then boom," said Lafontaine.
While the symptoms aren't always obvious, there are some signs to look for.
"Some of the things people can be aware of are changes in sleep patterns and eating habits, withdrawing from loved ones, mood swings, just people not acting their normal selves," said Lafontaine.
A key part to getting out of the blues is also being there for each other. Experts say if you notice someone is behaving differently, don't be afraid to reach out.
"Get outside of ourselves instead of focusing on what's so wrong, try to be appreciative and get out there and help other people. Exercise of course," said Lafontaine.
Experts say a lack of sunlight or Seasonal Affective Disorder can play a role, so it's important to get outdoors.
