Nicholas Rilee
A man who shot and killed his best friend pleaded guilty in Staunton Circuit Court Friday. Twenty-one-year-old Nicholas Rilee was sentenced to seven months in jail for involuntary manslaughter.
Rilee admitted to accidentally shooting 20-year-old Richard Firebaugh in March as the two played video games in a house on College Circle. Firebaugh died at the scene.
In March, Sergeant Eric Salemi of the Staunton Police Department said, "Nick Rilee was in the residence and explained to us what happened. We investigated the case and then we placed charges against Mr. Rilee. We don't believe that the shooting incident, the facts behind it, rose to the level of a one or two murder charge."
Police say Rilee is the person who called 911 to report the shooting. He told police that he thought the gun was unloaded.
