A murder suspect is in custody after police spent hours searching a Staunton house Thursday.

Nineteen-year-old Dallas Chaplin of Staunton is accused of killing Benjamin Graessle early Sunday morning in Harrisonburg. Police have been searching for Chaplin since Wednesday when they issued warrants for first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Staunton police say Harrisonburg officers contacted them Thursday morning with information that Chaplin was at 206 Peabody Street. According to officers, Staunton's critical incident response team began searching the house around 3:00 p.m.

Staunton Police Chief Jim Williams said, "We used our police robot to go inside and we then made hundreds of loud calls trying to get his attention, never did get his attention. We introduced tear gas and, ultimately with a search from our tactical team, we located him hiding in the basement."

Staunton police say Chaplin came out peacefully and is now in custody.

Harrisonburg police are still looking for 19-year-old Givi Dudunia of Staunton who is charged with assault and battery.
