Albemarle County Police are still trying to understand what led up to the deaths of two men during a standoff on Rio Mills Rd. Wednesday afternoon.
Just before noon on Wednesday, two 911 calls came in. The first, for a disorder between two men, now identified as 44-year-old Frank Davis and 50-year-old James "Sonny" Marshall. The second call said Davis was standing over Marshall with a gun.
Shortly after the second call, police arrived at 2525 Rio Mills Road. They found Davis standing in a garage.
Police say he pointed a rifle at the responding officers. One officer fired at Davis and he retreated into the garage.
"We suspect that he killed himself shortly after the encounter with the first officer," said Chief Steve Sellers of Albemarle County Police Department.
Before Davis' death was confirmed, a crisis negotiation team was called in to assist. Police say they attempted to make contact through telephone and a loud speaker. They also used electronic surveillance equipment to see the inside of the building.
Around 6 p.m., a SWAT team used an armored vehicle to break through the garage door, finding both men already dead.
"It's a mutual decision. It's a decision by a group of experts including myself into how we make entry into a location," said Sellers.
Investigators say Marshall and Davis knew each other, and Davis lived with Marshall along Rio Mills Road for a short period of time.
Overnight, officers remained at the house collecting evidence, including shell casings and interviewing family members, friends and witnesses.
"We have to follow through just as diligently whether or not it's going to come to court or not in the future," said Sellers.
Both bodies have been sent to the state medical examiner's office for an autopsy. Police have also executed several search warrants in the case but they have been put under a court ordered seal.
